WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls, is an all-female group formed by Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment in 2016. The group consists of thirteen members – Exy, Seola, Xuan Yi, Bona, Soobin, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, Yeoreum, Dayoung, and Yeonjung – divided into four different sub-units (Wonder Unit, Joy Unit, Sweet Unit, and Natural Unit). WJSN officially debuted on February 25, 2016 with the release of their first extended play (EP), Would You Like?
2015 to 2016: WJSNFormation
On December 4, 2015, Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment jointly launched a 12-member girl group called WJSN (Cosmic Girls) comprised of Korean and Chinese members divided into different sub-units. The agencies announced the first unit on December 10 – the Wonder Unit – formed by Cheng Xiao, Bona, and Dayoung. It was followed by the Joy Unit on December 17, composed of Xuan Yi, Eunseo, and Yeoreum. Shortly after, both Wonder and Joy units released a Christmas cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. On December 24, Sweet Unit was introduced, with members Seola, Exy, and Soobin. And finally, the Natural Unit including Mei Qi, Luda, and Dawon were announced on December 31.
WJSN officially debuted on February 25, 2016 with the release of their mini album Would You Like?, featuring the title tracks “Mo Mo Mo” and “Catch Me”. The group held their debut stage on Mnet’s M Countdown on the same day where they performed both songs.
On July 11, 2016, Starship Entertainment confirmed reports that Yoo Yeon Jung, who debuted in the project group I.O.I, will be joining WJSN as the group’s 13th member.
The following months, members Seola, Exy, Soobin, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Yeoreum, and Dayoung formed the unit “Y-Teen” with their labelmates, Monsta X. Y-Teen is a project group that will be promoting as commercial film (CF) models for KT’s phone fare service. They are also planned to release EPs, music videos, and various entertainment content.
On August 17, WJSN digitally released the mini album, The Secret, their first as a group of 13 members. The Secret includes a total of seven tracks, including both Korean and Chinese versions of the title track “Secret”. The album debuted at number 7 and peaked at number 6 on the Gaon Album Chart, while the title track “Secret” peaked at number 49 on the Gaon Digital Chart.
2017 to present: From. WJSN, first concert, and Happy Moment
On January 4, 2017, WJSN released their third mini album, From. WJSN, including the title track “I Wish”. The EP contains a total of six tracks, including a Chinese version of the title track. Three weeks after release, the album peaked at number 4 on the Gaon Album Chart, the group’s highest chart position since debut.
On May 19 and 20, WJSN held their first solo concert, called Would You Like – Happy Moment, at the Blue Square Samsung Card Hall.
WJSN released their first full-length album, Happy Moment, on June 7, featuring a total of ten tracks including the lead single “Happy”. But for the first time, there was no Chinese version of the lead single included in the album. On the same day of its release, WJSN held a media showcase of the new album, which was also broadcast through Naver’s V Live.
Happy Moment peaked at number 3 on the Gaon Album Chart on the first week of release, and 9th for the whole month of June, selling almost 26,000 copies within the first month. It also topped Hanteo’s daily and real-time charts.
On February 27, 2018, WJSN released their fourth mini album, Dream Your Dream, with the lead single “Dreams Come True”. On the same day of its release, the group held a comeback showcase at the Yes24 Live Hall, which was also simultaneously broadcast through Naver’s V LIVE.
Dream Your Dream features a total of six tracks, including a Chinese version of the title track. It peaked at number 2 on the weekly Gaon Album Chart, and at number 10 on the monthly edition.
In April, two of the group’s Chinese members (Mei Qi and Xuan Yi) participated in the Chinese version of Produce 101. Mei Qi finished in 1st place and Xuan Yi finished 2nd, making them both members of the project group Rocket Girls.
On May 2, two other WJSN members formed a project group, this time with members of Fantagio Music’s Weki Meki. The group is called WJMK (short for Wuju Meki) and is composed of WJSN’s Seola and Luda, and Weki Meki’s Yoojung and Doyeon. They released their digital single “Strong” on June 1. #
